Team XTR visits Andy Robinson Race Cars
Today I visited a motorsport fabricators near Hook in Hampshire called Andy Robinson Race Cars (ARRC). For those that aren’t aware ARRC offers every kind of fabrication service necessary to build a complete race car from scratch. Andy began racing dragsters in 1979 when he formed his own team. Andy is the current European speed record (229.4mph) holder, has won 3 British championships and his current personal best time of 6.19 seconds – certainly not to be sniffed at. At 6ft 4″ and a build to suit, he was the perfect man to come up with the solution to my high seat rails. If he can fit, I can fit.

Lets not forget, the reason I’m here is because the seats in the Team XTR DC2 sit too high and with my helmet on, I bang my head on the main rollover hoop of the rollcage. Not good.
Needless to say the old rails had to come out, cue plasma cutter and a steady hand:
Dave made light work of getting this sorted and sanded the old area up so it wasn’t sharp:

The custom feet were fabricated and welded into the transmission tunnel. We noticed a small hole which got bigger and bigger as we worked so this was patched accordingly.

The tubular bar was put in place and we mocked up the seats many many times to make sure we had the desired clearance:

After some time we had the bars finished and the new seating position was finished. Dave did a final check again with the spirit level to make sure it was spot on. He did a grand job.

With the drivers seat done we made a few minor changes to the passenger side as it wasn’t as drastic as the drivers side. We’re going to see how this goes over the next track day and pop back to Andy’s if there is any modifications needed.
In total we recovered around 3inches of height for my head which with the correct recline on the Corbeau Revenge seats gives me enough space for me, helmet AND rollcage padding.
